Why are behavioral services necessary in schools?

Most kids are in school all day, interacting with peers, learning new academic skills, and navigating the social/emotional environment. Behavioral skills are a prerequisite for academic success and the school environment is the ideal place to get started.

What do behavioral services look like in schools?

In some cases, an individualized behavior plan can help a struggling student get back on track. In other cases, a class-wide behavioral strategy could help a teacher who needs support. Behavioral principles can also be scaled up to positively impact the entire school or district community.

How are school-based behavioral services different from ABA in a clinic or home setting?

School-based behavioral services are responsive to the unique context of schools. It’s about applying the proven scientific principles of learning and motivation to support what is already going on in the classroom. That might look similar to what you see in a home or a clinic, where an adult is seated in close proximity to a student and giving them lots of support. It might also look very different, where a behavioral professional is consulting with the principal to develop a school-wide motivational system.

Who pays for school-based behavioral services?

Some students receive individualized behavioral support in school through their insurance or Medicaid. Elsewhere, districts set aside funds to provide outside behavioral services for their students and consult with their staff. Alternatively, some districts directly employ behavior analysts and technicians to support students and staff.

How do behavioral services relate to Positive Behavior Supports (PBS/PBIS)?

Positive behavior supports are rooted in the same principles as applied behavior analysis (ABA). PBS has been called “ABA at scale,” meaning that PBS is essentially what ABA services would look like if they were scaled up to the entire school or district level. Behavioral professionals can help educators optimize their PBS implementation through a thorough understanding of the underlying principles.
